Other Faculty Organizing

Follow the links below to read more about faculty unions at other universities. Links lead to full collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) where available; otherwise, they link to the respective union’s homepage.

I joined our union for three reasons: a voice in governance and decision-making; to support all impacted by campus closures and restructuring; to build a collective power to create systemic change within Penn State! - Jo Jankoski, Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, Penn State Fayette

Please note that each CBA differs in the ranks of faculty it covers; this is dictated in some cases by interest and in others by the relevant state or federal labor law at the time of formation.

This list is meant to be illustrative, not exhaustive.

In Pennsylvania

All of the other state-related institutions—Lincoln University, Temple University, and the University of Pittsburgh—have faculty unions.

Pennsylvania’s state university system is unionized as APSCUF.

In the Big Ten

Faculty members at all ranks are unionized at Rutgers and The University of Oregon. Michigan State, the University of Michigan, the University of Illinois, and UCLA have non-tenure-line faculty unions. Organizing drives are underway at Michigan State (for tenure-line faculty) and the University of Iowa.

Other Notable Public University Faculty Unions

The University of California system is organized at all ranks in an umbrella grouping; the California State University system is unionized as the California Faculty Association, an AFT/SEIU partnership. The State University of New York and City University of New York systems are unionized, as are the University of Massachusetts (Amherst and Boston) and the Connecticut State University systems. United Faculty of Florida includes colleges and universities across the state, such as the University of Florida.
